Multi-agent AI has a real certification now, an actual Microsoft exam rather than another training course. It's called AI-500, it's brand new, and it's still in beta.
That's worth pausing on. For the past couple of years, most AI certifications tested one thing: how well you could get a single model to do a single task. That's no longer the hard part. The hard part now is getting several AI agents to work together properly, each one handling its own slice of a bigger job, and AI-500 is the first Microsoft credential built to test exactly that skill.
If you're already building agent systems in Azure AI Foundry, this is probably the certification you've been waiting for. It's not an entry-level exam, though. It sits above the associate-level Azure AI certifications, at expert level, and it assumes you've already got production experience, not just tutorials behind you. There's also a gate: you can't simply book it the way you'd book most Microsoft exams, because it carries a prerequisite Microsoft checks before it lets you register.
So before you put it on your plan, it's worth knowing what AI-500 actually covers, who's eligible to sit it, and how to prepare while the official course and practice assessment still aren't live. Here's all three.

The certification is called Microsoft Certified: Multi-Agent AI Solutions Expert, and the exam behind it, AI-500: Designing and Implementing Multi-Agent AI Solutions, is still in beta while Microsoft gathers data on question quality, according to Microsoft's AI-500 certification page. Read that beta status as a signal rather than a warning: Microsoft only builds expert-level certifications around skills it's confident are becoming standard.
The roles it names are specific: AI engineers, AI edge engineers, developers, and solution architects who own a multi-agent system from design through to production, not the model layer alone. You'll be expected to work across the same table as ML engineers, platform engineers, data scientists and business stakeholders, because that's who actually signs off on a production agent system.
That breadth shows up directly in what the exam tests.
AI-500 groups its content into four skills domains, and the weighting tells you where it expects the most depth, according to Microsoft's AI-500 study guide:
Development carries the heaviest weight by a clear margin, and it's the most demanding domain too: advanced prompt engineering strategies, agent memory and context management, building tool ecosystems, and multi-agent orchestration itself. If you've only worked with single-agent Azure AI apps, this is where prior experience stops being enough on its own. Architecture, the lightest domain at 15 to 20%, still matters: you need to design the logical structure and choose the right technology components before you write a line of orchestration code, and questions here test that judgement directly.
The final two domains are what separate a working prototype from something a business will actually run. Evaluate, optimize and monitor covers validation strategies, tuning prompt and model performance, and building real observability into a multi-agent system rather than watching it run and hoping. Secure, govern and deploy covers guardrails, security controls, and the actual path to getting a multi-agent solution live on Azure. Together they're worth 40 to 50% of the exam, roughly as much as development, which tells you Microsoft is testing whether you can be trusted to run this in production, not only build it once.
Which is also why Microsoft doesn't let just anyone book the exam.
Not everyone, and that's by design. AI-500 has a prerequisite Microsoft currently lists as required: you need to already hold Microsoft Certified: Azure AI Apps and Agents Developer Associate, the AI-103 certification, before Microsoft will let you register. If you haven't sat AI-103 yet, that's where to start. Beyond the formal gate, Microsoft expects real hands-on experience: proficiency in Python, comfort across Azure compute, network, storage and data services, and practical use of Microsoft Foundry to orchestrate agent logic. You should also have worked with the open-source side of this world, the Microsoft Agent Framework, the Model Context Protocol, and LangGraph, plus retrieval-augmented generation, because the exam assumes you've built with these, not just read about them.
This is not a beginner's exam wearing an expert label. One thing worth knowing so you don't prepare for the wrong exam: Microsoft also certifies a lower-code path, AI Agent Builder Associate (AB-620), built around Copilot Studio rather than Azure AI Foundry. If your work is closer to configuring agents in Copilot Studio than writing orchestration code in Python, that's the better fit.
Once you know AI-500 is the right target, the practical problem is that Microsoft hasn't finished building the resources around it. The official course is listed as available from 30 September 2026, and a practice assessment usually follows a live exam by around eight weeks, so if you're reading this before either exists, you're not missing anything. They genuinely aren't published yet. Waiting, though, isn't the move.
Start with the prerequisite if you haven't sat it, using the AI-103 course above. Then close the gap between associate and expert with hands-on multi-agent work itself. Get AI-103 done if you haven't, build the orchestration experience while there's still runway, and you'll be ready the moment AI-500 moves off beta.
