At some point this month, you've probably talked to an AI on the phone. Either you barely noticed, because it understood the problem, routed you to the right place and a human picked up with your whole story already on screen, or you ended the call wanting to throw the phone at a robot that kept asking you to repeat yourself.
The distance between those two calls is rarely the technology. Both companies may well be running the same platform with the same features switched on. What separates them is the person who built the thing: the one who decides which requests the voice agent should handle on its own, which knowledge sources it draws answers from, how it hands a frustrated caller to a human, and what that human sees when the conversation lands on their screen.
There's a decent chance that builder is you, or could be. Maybe you already configured Dynamics 365 or Power Platform and the support side of the business keeps pulling you in, or your organisation has moved its customer lines onto Microsoft's stack and someone has to own how the AI behaves on them. Until now, doing that work well earned you nothing you could point at, because a well-built contact centre is invisible on a CV in a way a credential never is.
That's finally changed. AB-250, the Dynamics 365 Contact Center AI Engineer Associate, is the first certification that has ever existed for Dynamics 365 Contact Center, and it arrived this year with no predecessor, no retiring exam behind it and nobody holding a decade of seniority in it.
That newness cuts both ways, and it's worth being honest about it. Nobody can out-experience you on this exam, but there are also no veterans to learn from, no worn study routes, and no colleague who can tell you what sitting it felt like, because almost nobody has yet.
Whether it belongs in your plans comes down to what the exam actually tests, and the study guide holds a surprise there: the AI in the title is not where most of the marks live.
Most new Microsoft exams replace something older, and Microsoft is replacing a lot this year as it rebuilds its business applications certifications around AI. AB-250 is the exception in the wave: Dynamics 365 Contact Center only launched in 2024, as Microsoft's Copilot-first entry into a contact centre market that established vendors had owned for decades, so there was never an exam for it until now.
The Dynamics 365 Contact Center AI Engineer Associate certification sits at associate level and runs through a 120-minute proctored exam, delivered by Pearson VUE in English, with 700 as the pass mark. There's no prerequisite certification. What's striking is how wide Microsoft has drawn the audience: administrators, business analysts, functional consultants and platform engineers are all named target roles, which tells you this credential spans configuration work and genuinely technical territory rather than sitting neatly in one job description.
One vocabulary note before you touch the study materials, because it confuses everyone at first. In this product, agents means the AI. The humans taking calls are representatives. Once you know that, the exam outline below reads very differently.
No, and mixing them up means preparing for the wrong exam. MB-230 is alive and well with no retirement date, and it certifies Dynamics 365 Customer Service: the CRM application where cases get managed, knowledge articles get written and SLAs get tracked. AB-250 certifies Dynamics 365 Contact Center: the channel layer where calls, chats and messages arrive, get answered by AI agents or routed to people, and get summarised and analysed afterwards.
The names sound interchangeable and the products even work together, which is exactly why people mix them up. The honest way to choose is by the work in front of you. If your days are about case flows, knowledge management and the service desk itself, MB-230 still fits, and our MB-230 certification guide covers that path. If your days are about voice channels, chat widgets, routing rules and what the AI answers before a human ever hears the phone ring, you're the person AB-250 was written for. In plenty of organisations both roles exist, and they'll hold one certification each.
Microsoft's AB-250 study guide splits the exam into six weighted domains:
Look at where the weight falls. Implement channels carries roughly double any other domain, and most of its outline is the voice channel, so this exam is won or lost in the telephony plumbing rather than in the AI features the certification is named after. That's worth taking seriously if you come from the CRM side, because chat widgets and case forms will feel familiar while calling profiles, DTMF and IVR orchestration may be entirely new ground. Between channels and deployment, half the exam is infrastructure before a single AI capability gets configured.
Start with the study guide and be suspicious of your own familiarity, because the domains that feel comfortable are rarely the ones that decide the result. A trial environment where you actually stand up a voice channel, build a voice agent in Copilot Studio, wire up routing and then watch a conversation flow end to end will teach you what the exam is really asking, and it's the fastest way to find the gaps the study guide's polite bullet points hide. There's no practice assessment yet, which is normal for an exam this young, so hands-on rehearsal is the only rehearsal available.
For structured preparation, Readynez runs a three-day instructor-led Microsoft Dynamics 365 Contact Center AI Engineer (AB-250) Course covering deployment, channels, routing and the AI capabilities across the whole product. And since AB-250 rarely travels alone (the same teams usually face Power Platform, Customer Service or the new sales AI exams in the same budget year), Unlimited Microsoft Training covers instructor-led courses across the Microsoft stack under one subscription.
Remember the two phone calls this article opened with, because that gap is the market you're stepping into. Every organisation running the frustrating version of that call needs someone who can build the good one, and for the Microsoft platform, AB-250 is now the way to prove you're that person while the field is still empty.
