In the competitive field of IT security, professionals are constantly seeking an edge. We pursue advanced certifications, master new technologies, and plan our career trajectory with care. But what if one of the most powerful strategies for advancement has less to do with what you can gain, and more to do with what you can give?
Many individuals ask me about the "secret" to a successful and fulfilling career. My answer is often simpler than they expect: a significant portion of my own growth stems from a commitment to volunteering and adopting a genuinely helpful attitude, without any expectation of direct reward.
The practical application of this principle is straightforward: get involved. Information security associations across Canada—from local ISC² or ISACA chapters to OWASP and ISSA groups—are nearly always searching for dedicated volunteers. These organizations thrive on the efforts of people willing to handle the essential, often thankless, tasks of organizing events, managing administration, and setting up for meetings. By stepping up, you not only support your professional community but also gain invaluable experience and visibility.
A truly effective volunteer develops an instinct for identifying needs and quietly addressing them. The goal isn’t to seek applause or complain about the workload, but to simply do what you can to make things run smoothly for everyone. This approach—doing good work for its own sake—builds a reputation far more valuable than any self-promotion.
This mindset is not just for community activities; it is a secret weapon in the corporate world as well. Be the person who helps colleagues, contributes proactively, and functions as a true team player. Embrace tasks that force you to expand your knowledge and step outside of your comfort zone. Cultivating the wisdom to know when to speak, when to listen, and when to take a stand is a skill refined through practice.
If you never lose your appetite for learning, growth, and development, you will find that remarkable opportunities begin to gravitate toward you. This path is a proven route to a career filled with both achievement and deep personal satisfaction.
