Fostering Inclusion: A New Blueprint for Women in the Tech Sector

Blog Alt EN

A commitment to fostering a truly inclusive environment has long been a cornerstone of our philosophy at Readynez. We are honoured to announce our role as a key training provider in a groundbreaking new programme designed to cultivate greater diversity across the digital landscape, in partnership with the Greater Manchester Combined Authority and Serco.

Confronting a Key Industry Challenge

This initiative, titled the ‘Digital Careers Upskill Programme’, directly confronts the significant gender imbalance within the technology sector. Citing Manchester Digital’s Annual Skills Audit, which found that women hold just 18% of technical roles, the programme sets out to create meaningful change.

After extensive consultation with employers in the digital space, the Greater Manchester Combined Authority pinpointed several persistent barriers to growth. Among them were a notable shortage of varied skills, diverse perspectives, and different life experiences, which the new programme is tailored to address.

A Collaborative Model for Progress

The launch of this training was made possible through a major investment secured by the Greater Manchester Combined Authority. The authority obtained £42 million from the European Social Fund to support its wider, three-year Skills for Growth initiative, which is focused on resolving critical skills deficits identified by businesses throughout the city-region.

This partnership between public bodies and private training experts like Readynez serves as a powerful blueprint for how communities can proactively build a more representative and resilient tech workforce for the future.

How to address the Gaps

Throughout the 22-month contract, the Digital Careers Upskill Programme will address these gaps by targeting priority groups including women, the ageing population and low-paid workers.

Frank Højgaard CEO for Readynez: “Diversity in the digital workspace is a central concern for us.
“The IT industry in Europe is needing a staggering 1.000.000 tech workers according to the EU, and there is just no way to fill all of those positions with the available experienced workers, or even with trained tech people from university.

“IT recruiters need to change their whole approach and start looking at the talent, not the experience. When the talent is there, we can train them to do anything. There is no question, that Greater Manchester is really moving ahead of the game enabling their local businesses with this programme.”

Delivered across two strands, the programme will focus on reskilling people working across a range of sectors to get into new digital roles as well as upskilling those already working in the digital, creative and tech industry so they can progress further.

Councillor Bev Craig, Greater Manchester’s new portfolio holder for Education Skills, Work, Apprenticeships and Digital:

“We are home to the largest digital and creative cluster outside of London but to continue our growth and reach our ambitions of becoming a world-leading digital city-region, we need to invest in our residents and support our businesses.”

“We know through talking to employers in the digital sector that there’s a gap in mid to senior level roles, which highlights a need to create more opportunities for entry level talent who can then progress.

“Further to this, supporting the creation of a more diverse workforce will lead to innovation and business growth through productive and relatable decision making.”

As outlined in the Combined Authority’s Local Industrial Strategy, the Greater Manchester Skills for Growth programme focuses on supporting employed people across priority sectors including digital, retrofit, manufacturing, life sciences, hospitality and others.
