The Counterintuitive Secret to IT Security Leadership

In the world of IT security, ambition is the baseline. We all strive to earn new certifications, master emerging technologies, and climb the professional ladder. But what do you do when your career path hits a plateau? How do you make the leap from skilled practitioner to recognized leader?

It’s a question many people ask me. Having been very fortunate in my own life and career, I can share the answer, and it’s much simpler than you might imagine.

The Power of Proactive Contribution

A significant portion of my success has originated from one core principle: volunteering and maintaining an unselfish attitude. It’s about consciously deciding to help out and add value without any promise or expectation of a direct reward. The most effective way to practice this is by getting involved in your professional community.

Consider dedicating some of your time to the board of a local Information Security association, such as a regional ISC2, ISACA, OWASP, or ISSA chapter. Most of these organizations are actively looking for volunteers who are willing to take on the vital but often thankless jobs of organizing meetings, handling administration, and managing the small tasks that lead to a successful event for all attendees.

From Volunteer to Valued Professional

Becoming a great volunteer means developing a keen eye for what needs to be done and then quietly taking the initiative to do it. The goal isn’t to brag about your contributions or complain that others aren’t helping; it is simply to do what you can to make life and work better for everyone around you. It’s also crucial not to take on more than you can handle.

This mindset is also a powerful tool in your day-to-day professional life. Be the person who helps colleagues, contributes actively as a team player, and, most importantly, seeks out tasks that force you to stretch your knowledge and step outside your comfort zone. A key part of this is learning when to speak, when to be quiet, when to stand up, and when to sit down. As a former co-chair of the ISC2 CISSP CBK, I can attest that this hunger to grow, learn, and develop is what separates the best from the rest.
