The urgent need for greater diversity in the technology sector is a critical conversation in the United States and beyond. Companies recognize that a wider range of backgrounds is not just a social good, but a key driver of innovation. Yet, turning this recognition into tangible results remains a persistent challenge for the industry.
To address this, new and creative models are essential. Readynez is thrilled to be at the forefront of one such initiative, providing specialized training for a groundbreaking program. Through a unique partnership with the Greater Manchester Combined Authority and Serco, we are pioneering a new approach to cultivating a more inclusive digital workforce.
This initiative, named the ‘Digital Careers Upskill Programme’, directly confronts the gender imbalance in tech. A key catalyst was data from Manchester Digital’s Annual Skills Audit, which revealed that women hold a mere 18% of technical roles in the region’s digital industry. The program is specifically designed to change that statistic by creating new pathways into the sector.
This focused training is part of a larger, three-year regional commitment called the 'Skills for Growth' programme, made possible by a £42m investment secured by the Greater Manchester Combined Authority from the European Social Fund. After in-depth discussions with tech employers, the Authority found that critical skills shortages were deeply connected to a lack of diverse perspectives and life experiences on their teams. This upskilling program is a direct answer to that foundational business need.

Throughout the 22-month contract, the Digital Careers Upskill Programme will address these gaps by targeting priority groups including women, the ageing population and low-paid workers.
Frank Højgaard CEO for Readynez: “Diversity in the digital workspace is a central concern for us.
“The IT industry in Europe is needing a staggering 1.000.000 tech workers according to the EU, and there is just no way to fill all of those positions with the available experienced workers, or even with trained tech people from university.
“IT recruiters need to change their whole approach and start looking at the talent, not the experience. When the talent is there, we can train them to do anything. There is no question, that Greater Manchester is really moving ahead of the game enabling their local businesses with this programme.”
Delivered across two strands, the programme will focus on reskilling people working across a range of sectors to get into new digital roles as well as upskilling those already working in the digital, creative and tech industry so they can progress further.

“We are home to the largest digital and creative cluster outside of London but to continue our growth and reach our ambitions of becoming a world-leading digital city-region, we need to invest in our residents and support our businesses.”
“We know through talking to employers in the digital sector that there’s a gap in mid to senior level roles, which highlights a need to create more opportunities for entry level talent who can then progress.
“Further to this, supporting the creation of a more diverse workforce will lead to innovation and business growth through productive and relatable decision making.”
As outlined in the Combined Authority’s Local Industrial Strategy, the Greater Manchester Skills for Growth programme focuses on supporting employed people across priority sectors including digital, retrofit, manufacturing, life sciences, hospitality and others.
