Greater Manchester's thriving digital industry faces a significant challenge: a pronounced gender imbalance. According to Manchester Digital’s latest Annual Skills Audit, women currently occupy a mere 18% of technical roles, highlighting a critical need for targeted action to broaden the talent pool.
In response, the ‘Digital Careers Upskill Programme’ has been launched—a bespoke initiative created through a powerful partnership between the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA), Serco, and Readynez. The programme is specifically designed to address this diversity gap and create new pathways into the sector.
This vital training initiative is backed by a £42 million investment from the European Social Fund, allocated to the GMCA’s wider three-year Skills for Growth programme. The investment directly addresses skills shortages and barriers to entry, such as a lack of diverse perspectives and life experiences, which were identified through direct consultations with the city-region's digital employers.
At Readynez, we are immensely proud to be the training provider for this programme. Fostering inclusion is a core part of our mission, and we are thrilled to contribute our expertise to this collaborative effort to build a more diverse and representative digital workforce in Greater Manchester.

Throughout the 22-month contract, the Digital Careers Upskill Programme will address these gaps by targeting priority groups including women, the ageing population and low-paid workers.
Frank Højgaard CEO for Readynez: “Diversity in the digital workspace is a central concern for us.
“The IT industry in Europe is needing a staggering 1.000.000 tech workers according to the EU, and there is just no way to fill all of those positions with the available experienced workers, or even with trained tech people from university.
“IT recruiters need to change their whole approach and start looking at the talent, not the experience. When the talent is there, we can train them to do anything. There is no question, that Greater Manchester is really moving ahead of the game enabling their local businesses with this programme.”
Delivered across two strands, the programme will focus on reskilling people working across a range of sectors to get into new digital roles as well as upskilling those already working in the digital, creative and tech industry so they can progress further.

“We are home to the largest digital and creative cluster outside of London but to continue our growth and reach our ambitions of becoming a world-leading digital city-region, we need to invest in our residents and support our businesses.”
“We know through talking to employers in the digital sector that there’s a gap in mid to senior level roles, which highlights a need to create more opportunities for entry level talent who can then progress.
“Further to this, supporting the creation of a more diverse workforce will lead to innovation and business growth through productive and relatable decision making.”
As outlined in the Combined Authority’s Local Industrial Strategy, the Greater Manchester Skills for Growth programme focuses on supporting employed people across priority sectors including digital, retrofit, manufacturing, life sciences, hospitality and others.
